Botanical Name:   Echinops ritro

Form:   Herbaceous perennial

Height/Habit:   30" - 36", stately and sturdy

Spread:   20" - 24"

Spacing:   20" - 24"

Hardiness Zone:   3 - 8 (-40 degrees F)

Foliage Type:   Thistle-like, 6" - 8" long leaves with distinctive teeth/spines and deeply dissected, wavy margins. Steely blue in color.

Flower Form:   Large 1 1/2" - 2" globes born on grey stems.

Flower Color:   Dark blue purple.

Flowering Date:   Mid to late summer.

Planting Requirements:   Set at the same level it is at in the container. Firm and water thoroughly.

Soil Requirements:   Well drained. Once established it is tolerant of a wide range of soils, except wet ones.

Growth Rate:   Moderate.

Unique Characteristics:   Considered the best of the Globe Thistles. The dark steely blue, weather resistant flowers last a long time and are produced 4 - 8 on each branched stem. The flower heads provide good color before the actual flowers open, thereby prolonging the season. They bring a stately look to a border and are handsomely accented by the striking foliage. Even when the flowers are finished the leaves provide an attractive display. In areas with cooler night temperatures the flowers are a deeper blue.

Pruning:   Cut back spent flower stems.

Time of Pruning:   After flowering
